theory and reality. The Prototype Design & Fabrication (PDF) services group in Almaden is an
important partner for scientists and engineers at Almaden. PDF's professional staff of engineers,
designers, model makers and technicians is available to provide mechanical and electronic design and
engineering, tool and model making expertise, or even friendly expert advice for the do-it-yourself
individual. The electronics and mechanical design teams engineer and build to specifications using
the latest design technologies and fabrication tools. Model shop services include: 2-4 axis
conventional and CNC milling and turning, jig boring, surface and tool grinding, precision slicing &
dicing, wire EDM (electrical discharge machining), sinker EDM, fast hole burning EDM, fused
deposition modeling (FDM) rapid prototyping, welding, soldering, brazing, and sheet metal
fabrication. "Art-to Part" specialists work with scientists and engineers to reduce the time
required to turn ideas into reality by eliminating the need for detailed documentation of prototype
designs.
